BULATS (Business English)

The BULATS programme is designed for people who speak English as an additional language and need to use English at work, or intend to use English in a business or work environment.

BULATS is recommended for people wanting to:

  • improve their general and business-related English language skills and proficiency.
  • learn strategies for achieving the best possible result in the BULATS test.

The BULATS package is available as a fully-blended programme providing over 170 hours of Online Learning combined with comprehensive classroom resources.

The Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) is a language assessment service specifically for the use of companies and organisations which need a reliable way of assessing the language ability of groups of employees or trainees.

The service is designed to test the language of employees who need to use English language in their work, and for students and employees on language courses or on professional/business courses where English language ability is an important element of the course.

BULATS Listening

At the end of this module, students are expected to:

  • be familiar with, and understand, the format and requirements of, the Listening section of the BULATS Standard Test.
  • successfully interpret, predict and respond to BULATS-type Listening questions.
  • use listening skills to identify specific information, main ideas and the opinions and feelings of the speakers and to paraphrase.

BULATS Reading and Language

At the end of this module, students are expected to:

  • be familiar with, and understand the format and requirements of, the Reading and Language section of the BULATS Standard Test.
  • successfully interpret, predict and respond to BULATS-type Reading and Language Knowledge questions, tasks and texts.
  • use reading skills to identify specific information, main ideas, opinion, attitude, implied meaning and to paraphrase.
  • have improved their knowledge of grammatical forms and vocabulary relevant to the types of topics, texts and language they can expect to encounter in the BULATS Test.

BULATS Speaking

At the end of this module, students are expected to:

  • be familiar with, and understand the format and requirements of, the BULATS Speaking Test.
  • be able to interact successfully in a BULATS-type Speaking Test situation (this requires use of both linguistic and paralinguistic skills, such as body language)
  • produce speech that is cohesive, coherent, grammatically correct and appropriate to the situation.

BULATS Writing

At the end of this module, students are expected to:

  • be familiar with, and understand the format and requirements of, the BULATS Writing Test.
  • be able to effectively analyse and respond to BULATS-type writing tasks.
  • produce writing that is cohesive, grammatically correct, and follows the linguistic and formatting conventions of the text type.
